Reflections: Don’t be a Debbie Downer

Debbie DownerWhat is a “Debbie Downer”?

A Debbie Downer (Donnie Downer is the male equivalent) is a person who is constantly depressive and gloomy. They tend to destroy positive circumstances with their negative vibes. Their negativity is known to be infectious and make others feel miserable.

Example of a Debbie Downer:

Jane: “I just got a new dog”.
Debbie Downer: “My dog was run over a year ago.”

Explanation: Instead of Debbie Downer being happy Jane got a new pet, she says something negative and depressing. Now instead of Jane being happy about her new dog, she will feel sad and feel the need to console Debbie Downer about losing her pet. A positive interaction is now uncomfortable and negative.

Being a Debbie Downer or being around a Debbie Downer is not good for your overall health (i.e. mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, etc.). It is ludicrous for anyone to believe the world is always unforgiving; however, some people choose to believe it.

A lot of success in life can be achieved with positive thinking. No successful person ever said, “I can’t.” If you start off self-doubting, complaining or being negative, you will not accomplish anything. Be your biggest cheerleader and say “Yes, I can”. Then start surrounding yourself around people who are positive and have goals.
