Where Is My Tax Refund?

The 2020 tax season is here! If you are like us, then you have filed your 2020 federal tax return already. If you haven’t filed yet, don’t worry. This year the deadline has been extended from April 15th to July 15th.

If you didn’t break even or have to pay a balance due, you are most likely looking for your tax refund.

Where’s My Refund?

You can track your refund with the Where’s My Refund tool online or the IRS2Go mobile app. This is the fastest and easiest way to track your refund. The systems are updated once every 24 hours.

You can also call the IRS to check on the status of your refund. However, be prepared for long wait times for a customer service representative. If you can, it is best to avoid the wait by using the automated phone system. Follow the message prompts when you call.

What You Will Need?

You will need the following to get the status of your refund:

Social security number (SSN) or ITIN – The number should match your tax return. If you filed a Married-Filing Joint tax return, then either SSN can be used.

Your filing status – Select the filing status shown on your tax return: Single, Married-Filing Joint, Married-Filing Separate, Head of Household, or Qualifying Widow(er).

Your exact refund amount – You must enter the exact whole dollar refund amount shown on your tax return.

When To Expect Your Refund?

Refunds are generally issued within 21 days of when you electronically file your tax return or 42 days of when you file paper returns.

If it’s been longer, something may be wrong. It is best to call and speak to a customer service representative.

TIP: If you want to get to a representative quickly, call the IRS as soon as they open. Their phone lines open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. your local time. Best of luck!

Please let us know what you plan to do with your tax refund in the comments. We would love to hear from you.
