Melania Trump is now the First Lady of the United States of America, but who is she and where did she come from? Apart from her decision to marry President Donald Trump, which is what secured her the First Lady status, there is a lot about this woman that a lot of people might just not be aware of.
Slovenian Born
While President Trump might have a serious stance on illegal immigration, he is fond of his foreign-born wife. In fact, Melania is the second foreign-born First Lady. First Lady Louisa Adams, wife of John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States, was the first. Melania was born in Novo Mesto, Slovenia (then Yugoslavia) in 1970. While her modeling career (which began as early as 5 years old) would have her occasionally working in the United States, she actually did not become a legal permanent resident of this country until 2001. Her official citizenship would follow five years later in 2006.
After she married Donald Trump in 2005, they were blessed with a child (Barron William Trump) in 2006. Melania would take credit for his middle name. The child takes much after his father, appreciating the look of a suit and tie and playing golf at the age of 10.
Life as First Lady
Already Melania’s time as First Lady has been ripe with controversy. She did not have a very active role in the campaign. In particular, her modeling (namely her leaked naked photo shoot in 1995) was a topic of a lot of controversy. This is not what a lot of Americans thought a First Lady should have done.
Since she has become the First Lady of the United States, she has decided to remain in New York City and oversee business while her son attends school. This is the first time in history that a First Lady has not joined the President in the White House. This combined with Melania Trump frowning through several pictures taken at the inauguration, left many Americans wondering if she wanted the responsibility of her title at all.
Mission as First Lady
While she has already proclaimed her stance as First Lady is going to be limiting cyber bullying, it is yet to be seen if this is going to be a successful avenue for change. Critics have questioned the First Lady for choosing cyber bullying as her focus. Her husband is known to go on Twitter rants regularly – mocking and demeaning his opponents.
