****Possible Spoilers

Here are some things we know about Ghost in the Shell:

The world takes place in the future. Around the year 2029.

The main protagonist is cyborg named Major Motoko Kusanagi. She will be played by Scarlett Johansson.

She will be battling cyber criminals (i.e. the Puppet Master, the Laughing Man) in Japan (comics) –> possibly somewhere else in the film.

The idea of a “ghost” refers to a person’s consciousness

There will be deep contemplation on ideas surrounding  artificial intelligence (AI). For example, what is human?

Controversy

Some people were not pleased with the lead role being played by a non-Asian actress (Johansson) . People have called it another “whitewashing” by Hollywood. In a Marie Claire interview, Johansson has stated that “diversity is important in Hollywood, and [she] would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive”.

Based on the movie trailer, the movie looks very intriguing. Will you check it out? And if you are already a fan of Ghost in the Shell based on the manga and anime, what are you expectations for the film? Let us know in the comments.
